Last weekend we had the opportunity to pass out tracts as we trick-or-treated. It was a great opportunity, one we wish we would have taken advantage of before this year. In the past we have gone back and forth about the best way to handle Halloween, and we never could really come to a solid conclusion. Some years we attended church parties. Other years we stayed at home and avoided Halloween all together.
But our decision this year to take advantage of the unique opportunity presented by Halloween was by far the most fun. At what other time of the year will people willingly open their door to you? No one appeared to be freaked out when we rang their bell. They knew exactly why our kids were on their porch. I was amazed at how many people actually were home and prepared with a large basket of candy in hand as they opened their doors to us. Our boys immediately handed each person a tract, accepted the candy and a “thank you” for the tract, and we went on our way to the next house.
We all had tons of fun. Although I was very hesitant to proceed with the idea at first, I am so glad that we did. We actually met people around our block whom we had never met before. And we made the day of a number of elderly neighbors who appeared to be thoroughly excited to see the children. When we arrived at home we explained that the best part of the night was not the candy they had received, but the reward in heaven which God has waiting for them for willingly sharing His truth with others.
