I realize there are many who get bored with hymns. As I was growing up, I must admit, I was not terribly impressed with the long, drawn out hymns which I thought were so hard to really “get into.” But once I began really thinking through the words of the great hymns, I began to see just how beautiful so many of them are.
The greatest hymns have stood the test of time because they speak truth, and the truth of God does not change. We can still marvel at Reginald Heber’s “Holy, Holy, Holy,” written over 200 years ago, as well as Martin Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” written 480 years ago!
I had tried for quite a while to find a music cd which would help me to learn some of the classic hymns. Although it was often beautifully done, the music I was finding did not help me learn the words. I struggled to separate out the voices (often choirs) from the instruments.
That was until I received Kory Welch’s cd, ENDURING PRAISE: Classic Hymns for Today through Grace to You ministries with John MacArthur. I have probably listened to this cd more than any other (and of course, we’ve added the music to our iPod). I love Kory’s clear and well trained voice. The instrumentals are also gorgeous, and do not overpower Kory in the least. As often as I have played the music, I never find that I tire of hearing it. Interestingly, my boys never tire of it, either.
If you are looking for a gift for someone who has just about everything, Kory’s cd might be just the thing you need. Or, if you and your children are looking to learn the some of the best hymns of all time, this cd would definitely be a great place to start! (Kory’s music is also available through iTunes.)
