Math U See Review

After looking through a number of reviews of math curriculum for home schooling, I excitedly decided upon Math U See.  Although I have always enjoyed math and have been pretty good with it, I have never felt comfortable with teaching math to others.  The best part of Math U See is that before I teach my children, I have the huge advantage of being taught (by Mr. Demme) how to correctly do and teach the problems myself through the program’s DVDs.

When I was growing up we often memorized our facts without really learning the concepts behind what we were learning.  Sometimes we even learned little tricks that actually made math more difficult as we got into higher levels of learning.   With Math U See, memorizing is still a big part of the learning, but it is done in connection with gaining a solid grasp of the math concepts themselves.  My children are recognizing that numbers can often be manipulated and reorganized in such a way as to make a seemingly difficult problem much simpler.

While some of the programs out there are bright and flashy and almost nauseating, Math U See is pretty straight forward.  In spite of its simplicity, both of my boys are thoroughly enjoying math.  They are learning to think, and that is so fun to see!

You can learn more about the Math U See program on their website.  On the site’s front page you will find an introductory video, as well as a demo video which will give you a very good idea of how the program operates.  You can also find reviews of the different levels of the Math U See program through The Old Schoolhouse.
