It only makes sense that I would write my first review about My Father’s World curriculum, written by Marie Hazell. Shortly after deciding to stay home with our children, I began feeling as though homeschooling was part of God’s plan for us. Although my degree is in K-9 education, the idea of teaching my own children through all levels of their education was actually quite overwhelming to me. I looked through curriculum online, but how in the world can you really figure out how the whole program will work based on the limited information presented through most sites? I had a good idea of what I wanted my children’s education to look like, I just really did not think I was going to be able to find it all together in one place.
Not really knowing where to start, I decided to attend my first homeschooling conference three years ago. It was through this conference that I first was introduced to the My Father’s World curriculum.
In his presentation of the curriculum, David Hazell, husband of Marie Hazell, managed to answer every concern I had regarding the necessary elements of well-rounded curriculum. I cannot tell you the relief that I felt as I found myself relaxing more and more throughout David’s presentation. You can hear David explain just how the program works, and how it compares with other programs through this cd.
As you will find on their website, www.mfwbooks.com, the curriculum truly is easy to teach, even if you have no background in teaching. I have gone through preschool and kindergarten with our boys, and we are now working on 1st grade. So far I have found there to be very little preparation time necessary. Biblical content and character development are integrated into the material. While there are paper and pencil activities, the younger grade levels include a variety of hands-on activities which help to teach difficult concepts.
Marie has done a wonderful job of compiling the curriculum, including the best of a variety of sources. The curriculum is based on a deep understanding of how children learn, and how parents can best teach their children in a practical manner. If I could go back and be a kid again, this is the way I would choose to be taught.
While it is hard to pin down my favorite aspect of My Father’s World, I would have to say I most appreciate the Hazell family’s commitment to Bible translation. Not only are the curriculum and books very affordable, but a portion of the the profits go towards Bible translation.
