What’s Your Motivation?

I’ve realized in my own life that I can get myself into worthwhile projects for the wrong reasons.  Sometimes I just need a challenge which will make me feel as though I am accomplishing something.  Sometimes I am out to prove something to someone else.  Unfortunately, my list of  selfish and ridiculous motivations could probably go on and on.

But as a mother, as a wife, and most importantly, as a follower of Christ, my time and my energy are not my own.  When I make decisions to take on a project, that project takes time away from activities I can be doing with the most important people in my life.  My husband and my children are the most wonderful gifts God has given to me.  And yet, I have failed miserably at times to recognize them as such, desiring personal accomplishment over their best interests.

Here are a few questions you and I can consider as we take on a project such as home-based business:

1. Does this project, in any way, contradict the Word of God?
2. Have I prayed about my involvement in the project?
3. Is this really something God wants me to do, or is it a project God wants me to pray will come to pass through the work of others?  If this project is meant for me, is it something God wants me to do right now, or is this something God wants me to aim towards and prepare myself for for the future?
4. Have I weighed the costs of both participating in the project and not participating in the project?
5. How much time and energy will this project take from me and from others?  Would that time and energy be better spent by serving God or my family through other avenues?
6. Does this project need to be done on a large scale, or can it be done on a smaller scale and still be successful?
7. Does this position fit the gifts which God has given to me?
8. What am I really hoping to accomplish through this project?  (Be VERY honest with yourself!)
9.  Are my motivations enough to carry me through to the completion of this project?
10. How will God be glorified through this project and through me as I work towards its completion?
